COCOA IN BRAZIL
Cocoa originates from tropical America, in the wild, ranging from Peru to Mexico. Denominated "Theobroma cacao" of the family Esterculiáceas, the cocoa was considered like sacred by the Aztecs and Mayan Indians, where the cultivations were accompanied of religious ceremonies.
Botanists believe that cocoa originates from the headwaters of the Amazon River, which expanded in two main directions, originating two important groups: Criollo and Forastero. The Criollo group has spread northward to the Orinoco River, through Central and Southern Mexico. It produces large, wrinkled-shaped fruits. The seeds are large, with white or pale violet interior. It was the type of cocoa cultivated by the Aztec and Mayan Indians.
The Forastero group spread the Amazon region below and towards the Guianas. It is considered the true Brazilian cocoa and is characterized by ovoid fruits, like smooth surface, imperceptibly furrowed or wrinkled. The inside of its seeds is dark violet or sometimes almost black.
The cultivation of cocoa in Brazil occurred initially in the mid-eighteenth century, in 1679, starting in the south of Bahia around 1740 to 1750, initially in Canavieiras city ant then in Ilheus.
With good adaptation to the soil and climate, Bahia became responsible for (95%) of the national production, followed by Espirito Santo (3.5%) and Amazonia with (1.5%).
Brazilian cocoa cultivation is mainly a family activity, but it is also cultivated by large farmers, reaching thousands of tons per year.
