GUARANA IN BRAZIL
The guarana tree, variety Sorbilis (Martius) Ducke (Sapindaceae) whose scientific name is the Paullinia cupana, originating in the Amazon, produces the fruit called guarana. The fruit is rich in caffeine and, due to its stimulating properties, it is used in the manufacture of syrups, bars, powders, soft drinks, energy drinks, etc. It has red bark and, when ripe, leaves appear to the white pulp and its seeds, resembling with eyes.
At the end of the 70’s, guarana production in Brazil was found in the city of Maués (Amazonia), known as the birthplace of guaraná, which it was used by indigenous tribes. From the beginning of the 80''''s, guarana was introduced in other states, such as Mato Grosso and Bahia. The caffeine content in the guarana seed may range from 2.0 to 5.0% (dry weight). These contents are much higher than those of coffee (1 to 2%), mate (1%) and cocoa (0.7%). In addition to caffeine, other modified nucleosides such as theobromine and theophylline were found in guarana seed.
The favorable climate and favorable conditions for the plant, the development of the plant and its fall in production in the state of Amazonia, Bahia became the world''''s largest producer of guarana, especially in Taperoá. It is estimated that guarana production in Brazil represents an average of 4,300 tons / year.
Even an area decrease of 3.3% in Bahia, it is expected to remain the leader in the ranking of Brazilian production with 2,600 tons. Amazonas will be in second, reaching a production of 855 tons, equivalent to 7.7% more than the total harvested in the last harvest. The cultivation of guarana is of socioeconomic importance for the southern region of Bahia, because it is planted by small farms and is typical of family agriculture.

THE LEGEND OF GUARANÁ
A couple of Indians belonging to the Maués tribe lived together for many years without having children, but they wished to be parents. One day, they asked Tupã to give them a child to complete that happiness. Tupã, the king of the gods, knowing that the couple was full of kindness, fulfill their wish by bringing them a lovely boy. Time passed quickly and the boy grew handsome, generous and good. However, Jurupari, the god of darkness, felt an extreme envy of the boy and the peace and happiness he conveyed, and decided to reap that life in bloom.
One day, the boy went to collect fruits in the forest and Jurupari took advantage of the occasion to launch his revenge. He turned into a venomous snake and bit the boy, killing him instantly. The sad news spread quickly. At this moment, thunder echoed and heavy lightning struck the village. The mother, who cried in despair, understood that the thunder was a message from Tupã, saying that she should plant the child''''s eyes and that a new plant would grow giving them a tasty fruit. The Indians obeyed their mother''''s requests and planted the boy''''s eyes. In this place grew the guarana, whose seeds are black, each with an aril around them, imitating the human eyes.
